Origin – About the product

Used for a long time in South America and Mexico, these little seeds, mainly black and white comes from the Salvia Hispanica plant. In ancient times Aztecs and Mayan cultures used them for their properties, they consider chia seeds as a supernatural food. Like many other foods, chia seeds were also forbidden by the Spanish due to the fact that it was a sacred and was use in religious ceremonies. In Mayan “Chia” means strength, probably for the large amount in energy it provides.

Health Benefits

Among the health benefits of chia seeds, we can mention lowering cholesterol, controlling diabetes and hypertension, improving heart conditions by containing Omega 3. It is also good for the digestive system. We have to mention that it has anti-inflammatory properties also.

Chia seeds contains a high amount of antioxidants. They fight the production of free radicals, who damage cells by contributing to ageing. The high protein found in chia seeds (much higher than most plants) also contribute to reduce appetite.

Uses – Usage

As chia seeds don´t have a very strong flavor they can be used in many foods. Normally chia seeds are mixed with water, chia seeds swell and form a gel. This gel can be used as a substitute for eggs and is mainly used by vegans. We can use chia seeds on baked goods, like pancakes.
