It is also known as Peruvian ground apple. Traditionally it grows in the northern and central Andes. Yacon was unknown to the major cities on Peru, until early 2000 when the Japanese press reports their properties, such as anti-hyperglycemic, which made the crop widely known in Peruvian cities. Yacon syrup and tea, as well as leaves have become very popular among dieters and people with diabetics.

Yacon (yacón) is a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Its roots have a pleasant sweet taste and are eaten as a fruit by the Andean people. In several areas of Bolivia and Peru, it is customary to eat yacon to alleviate gastrointestinal problems and for the treatment of diabetes. These properties are strongly linked to an active principle found in high concentrations in their roots, fructooligosaccharides (FOS). Yacon is also consumed by the belief that it prevents aging due to the fact that yacon is a rich source of antioxidant compounds.
